This Is what Happens to Your Heart when You Drink a lot of Energy Drinks

Caffeine has a lot of health benefits, for example, it can relieve headaches, better one’s mental alertness, and treat certain conditions like asthma and diabetes. However, these benefits are diminished when caffeine is mixed with different sweeteners, artificial stimulants, toxins, and other additives.

The Dangerous Effect of Caffeine

When mixed with the abovementioned substances, caffeine can cause cardiovascular problems and heart attacks. This was the case with a 33-year old Brooklyn father who died as a consequence of Red Bull, a popular energy drink. His mother, Patricia, explained that her son was an active smoker who drank Red Bull on a daily basis. He told her that this drink perked him.

The Dangerous Effects of Red Bull

According to a study by Mayo Clinic, energy drinks can lead to heart problems. Namely, a trial with 15 individuals who drank 500 ml of an unidentified energy drink daily for 7 days showed an increase in blood pressure by 8% in 4 hours after consumption of the drink. This percentage increased to 10% by the end of the week.

The participants’ heart rates increased by 8% on the first day and increased additional 3% by the end of the week. Unfortunately, these factors increase the chance of a heart attack and an elevated blood pressure can cause arterial damage and lead to stroke.

What Is Red Bull Made of?

Red Bull is filled with sugar and it’s carbonated. It also contains different stimulants, like caffeine and taurine. Another study, which analyzed the effects of Red Bull on participants before and after working out, showed that Red Bull was the only drink which affected the stroke volume or the amount of blood pumped in and out of the heart.

Alternative Drinks

Since the effects of Red Bull can be detrimental, it’s better to avoid them and opt for other healthier beverages that can boost your energy levels.
