Choosing the right foundation can be an arduous task, particularly if you’re unsure over your undertones.

Undertones go beyond the general colour of your skin. They’re separated into three categories; warm, cool and neutral.

Warm undertones tend to lean towards peachy, yellow or golden tones; cool undertones mean your skin has hints of pink, red or blue; while neutral is a mixture of these colours.

However, figuring out your undertone goes far beyond examining your skin. Here are five ways to decipher yours – and if you’re unable to decide between the two options, you’re most likely neutral-toned…

The colour of your veins

Take a look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. Do they appear more blue or green? If your veins appear more blue, you’re cool-toned but if you see more green, you’re warm-toned.

The right type of jewellery

The colour of your jewellery is another easy way to figure out your undertones. Simply put on some gold and silver jewellery and decide which one you look better in. If you lean towards gold, you’re warm-toned, while silver means cool-toned.

The colour of your clothes

Have you ever thought that certain colour look better on you? If you find yourself opting for earth tones, such as yellows, oranges, red and olive-green, you’re warm-toned. If you prefer jewel-tones such as blues, emerald-greens and purples, you’re cool toned.

How your skin reacts in the sun

When you’ve spent a lengthy amount of time in the sun, how does your skin react? If you find that you tan easily, you’re warm-toned, whereas those that burn easily or turn pink are cool-toned.

The colour of your eyes and hair

While this point is the least straightforward of all, your eye and hair colour can generally give an indication to your undertone. Those with blue, grey or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair with platinum tones are likely to be cool-tones. If you have brow, amber or hazel eyes with red, black or strawberry blonde hair, it’s likely that you’re warm-toned.
